Stripe Still Uses Its 2017 API Blueprint. The Rest of Us Just Delete Databases and Start Over.

Our take on Stripe Still Uses Its 2017 API Blueprint. The Rest of Us Just Delete Databases and Start Over.

In a 2017 blog post we're revisiting like a fine wine, Stripe detailed its almost pathological commitment to API versioning. They treat their endpoints like ancient Greek infrastructure—immutable, eternal, and designed so they never have to explain to a client why a field name changed. This level of backward compatibility is either a masterclass in engineering discipline or the most elaborate way to avoid a mass Slack meltdown we've ever seen.

Fast forward to our current year, and the idea of an API contract lasting more than a fiscal quarter feels like a radical act of defiance against Silicon Valley's "move fast and break things" ethos. Stripe essentially built a time machine for HTTP responses. Meanwhile, the rest of us treat versioning like a suggestion box we never check.
